Hi, my name is Sophia and I’m your SRC President. I grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta and moved to Bishop’s at 17. I’ve fallen in love with the community and beautiful surrounding area. I’m studying a double major in Political Studies and pre-Clinical Psychology, and have worked for the SRC for two years, while being a Research and Teaching Assistant! I love everything cozy, coffee in all its forms, all the animals, especially cats, I have two at home and we are a foster family for the SPA. I love hiking, paddle boarding, yoga, travel, the cauliflower bites from the purple pod, and student leadership and advocacy.
In my role as President, I am the primary leader of your Student Association, I am an advocate for students to the University, Provincial, and Federal governments, and I oversee the Board of Student Representatives. So, what does the SRC actually do for you? We provide you with a number of resources, services, spaces to meet new friends, places to gather, and an advocate in your corner. First and foremost, we listen and advocate for your needs, your safety, your academics, your student experience. We are a non-for-profit student union and our membership is made up of thousands of students who came from all walks of life to find themselves at Bishop’s.
Students know us best for our services, including the Gait, your on-campus bar where we host Saturday Gait Nights, Wine and Cheeses with your Professors and Happy Hours. It is a place where you will make new friends, network, and where every Gaiter is welcome. We provide students with a dynamic optional health and dental plan through Student Care. We also operate the Student Success Centre (SSC), in the Library Learning Commons, where you can go for all things academic supports. We collaborate with other groups on campus to bring you Exam Care Packages, Pet Support Days, and offer more than 50 extracurricular groups.
I chose to work for your SRC because I believe our University should be a safe and inclusive place that fosters an open-minded and welcoming culture for every student. I love connecting with students and understanding your needs, please pop by my office (even just to introduce yourself) and we can have a coffee together.
Sending you love!
