Title:Vice President Student Life (the “VPSL”)
Department: Students’ Representative Council (“BUSRC”, or the “SRC”)
Term of Office: May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023
Expected Hours: 25 hours per week
Salary: $12,485 annually, paid in biweekly installments
Description:
As an elected member of the SRC Executive Council (President, VP Academic Affairs, VP External Affairs, Director of Finance, Director of Events and Director of Communications & Marketing), the VPSL is is a voting member of the Board of Student Representatives and the Executive Council of the SRC. The VPSL is responsible for protecting and advocating for the rights and interests of the student body on a variety of University committees and within the community at large. The VPSL is responsible for addressing all non-academic complaints to the SRC and gathering data about student interests. The VPSL acts as the general liaison between the SRC and the University’s Student Services management team, as well as with the office of the Dean of Student Affairs. The VPSL is also responsible for managing the logistics of the joint SRC – Student Services BUnited Peer Support Centre, including keep the Centre running and organized. The VPSL also oversees SRC Extra, the recognized extracurricular groups that operate under the SRC.
Requirements:
- Must be a full-time or part-time degree student at Bishop’s University, enrolled for 2022-23
- Must be present at Bishop’s University from May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023
Nature of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advocate for students’ rights and interests in committee meetings with administration, faculty, and other student group stakeholders
- Work in close collaboration with the SRC elected representatives, more specifically the Environmental, Equity, Ethnic Diversity, International Student, Indigenous, and Health & Wellness Representatives, who work with the VPSL primarily in protecting and advocating for students on University committees, and assist in the gathering of data about student interests.
- Be a voting member of the following SRC committees:
- Gaiter Grants Committee
- Residence Student Life Committee
- Sit on various University committees, including but not limited to:
- Committee on Life at the University
- Committee on Student Conduct
- Alcohol Concerns Committee.
- Sit on or assign representatives to sit on the following University committees:
- Student Services Directors Committee
- Buildings Committee (monthly)
- Dining Committee (bi-monthly)
- Parking Committee
- Joint Health and Safety Committee (monthly)
- Green Levy Committee (bi-monthly)
- Harassment Committee (monthly)
- Residence Assistant (R.A.) Hiring Committee (annually)
- Valedictorian Selection Committee (annually)
- Psychological Wellness Committee (bi-weekly)
- Gather information and data from the student body to help the SRC properly advocate for students’ interests in all SRC departments.
- Be responsible for addressing non-academic student complaints to the SRC and ensuring that they are adequately resolved.
- Help meet the social and non-academic needs of the student body through overseeing the organization of various activities that appeal to the students, as well as all non-academic SRC events both on campus and off campus, that are not expressly under the jurisdiction of another Executive member;
- Act as the liaison between the membership and the BSR for issues pertaining to student life and wellness.
- Provide support, guidance and training to SRC extracurricular groups in creating, developing and running their clubs, societies, associations and teams.
- Support all other SRC executive members, as needed, in the planning and management of their departments.
- Support the Director of Events with the planning, preparation, and execution of social events during Orientation Week.
- Keeping written notice of policy changes/developments throughout the year.
- The VPSL must actively participate in training the newly-elected VPSL during the winter semester and must submit an end-of-year report to the BSR meeting at the final meeting of the year.
