Title:Vice President of External Affairs (VPEA)
Department: Students’ Representative Council (“BUSRC”, or the “SRC”)
Term of Office: May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023
Expected Hours: 25 hours per week
Salary: $12,485 annually, paid in biweekly installments
Description:
As an elected member of the SRC Executive Council (President, VP Academic, VP Student Life, Director of Finance, Director of Events, and Director of Communications & Marketing), the Vice President of External Affairs is responsible for representing Bishop’s University students, and its Students’ Representative Councils’ interests to any and all external organizations. These may include but are not limited to, the Union étudiante du Québec (UEQ), the Borough of Lennoxville, TASSE (Table Associative Estrienne), and the Maple League of Universities. The main role is to represent and advocate on behalf of students to external institutions that affect post-secondary education policy and students. The VPEA will ensure the follow-up of the students’ concerns by conducting research with current students, other student organizations, and/or administrators.
Requirements:
- Must be a full-time or part-time degree student at Bishop’s University, enrolled for 2022-23.
- Must be present at Bishop’s University from May 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023.
- Must be fully bilingual (English/French)
Nature of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Capitalize work to build and maintain positive relationships between the students and various stakeholders in the city and the Borough, and bring students’ concerns to municipal, provincial, and federal governments
- Liaise and investigate possibilities for collaboration with other university student associations, and with provincial and national student organizations
- Liaise with students to address and communicate issues
- Receive concerns, feedback and/or criticism pertaining to the SRC or the University that relates to any element of the student experience
- Follow-up on student concerns, by conducting research with current students, other student organizations, university staff and administration, etc.
- Advocate on behalf of students at both SRC and University committee meetings
- Plan and promote opportunities to meet with students for a minimum of two hours per week (SRC Offices, SUB Lobby, etc.), in addition to meetings of the SRC Board of Student Representatives
- Relay findings, recommendations and issues to the BSR, Executive Council and the students
- Volunteer as necessary for SRC events and operations such as Volunteer Walk Home Team, SRC forums, etc.
- Sit on various committees including the Town and Gown Committee, TASSE
- Attend Borough of Lennoxville council meetings
- Be aware of SRC goals and concerns, in efforts to effectively express these to external bodies
- Maintain communication with relevant SRC and external representatives
- Reading any and all documents from the UEQ in order to remain informed and prepared for the various meetings and caucuses
- Keeping members of the SRC aware of special caucuses, especially if it directly concerns an issue of particular concern to Bishop’s students
- Forging strong relations and open lines of communication with the members of the Maple League of Universities
- Travel to and attend all major caucuses.
- Support all other SRC executive members, as needed, in the planning and management of their departments.
- Support the Director of Events with the planning, preparation, and execution of social events during Orientation Week.
- Must actively participate in training the newly-elected VPEA during the winter semester and must submit an end-of-year report to the BSR meeting at the final meeting of the year.
