Job Title: Advocacy Coordinator
Position Type: Part-Time (an average of 15 hours per week)
Contract Duration: May 1, 2026 – April 30, 2027
Reports To: Executive Director
Salary: $17.50 per hour
Job Summary: The Bishop’s University Students’ Representative Council (BUSRC) is seeking a passionate and dedicated Advocacy Coordinator. This role involves researching student concerns, developing position statements, preparing documents for various meetings, and advancing initiatives that promote student well-being. The Advocacy Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.
Requirements:
- Must be a full-time or part-time degree student, in good academic standing, at Bishop’s University, enrolled for the 2026-27 academic year.
- Must be in good standing with Campus Security and the Vice-Principal of Student Affairs office
- Must be present at Bishop’s University from mid-August 2026 – April 30, 2027
- Must be willing to place their SRC duties above all other non-academic responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Policy, Research & Position Statements
- Draft position statements on behalf of the BUSRC, ensuring they align with the priority areas established by the Board of Student Representatives (BSR).
- Investigate student concerns and broader post-secondary issues, ensuring positions taken by BUSRC are well-informed and evidence-based.
- Work with the BUSRC Board to develop policy proposals, advocacy campaigns, and formal recommendations.
- Strategic reflection and planning on how to approach and address issues.
- Monitor and respond to university policy changes that affect students.
- Assist with the process for developing the next BUSRC strategic plan and ensuring student input into it
Quebec Student Union & CASA Engagement
- Read relevant documents and prepare responses for Quebec Student Union caucuses and Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) meetings.
- Assist in developing and reviewing position papers and advocacy strategies for these meetings.
- Represent BUSRC’s interests in these external student organizations.
Collaboration & Representation
- Work closely with student representatives, faculty, and university staff to advance student-focused policies.
- Build relationships with external advocacy organizations to strengthen student representation at the local and national levels.
- Hold office hours for BSR members for support on projects and for students-at-large to answer questions and receive concerns.
Administration & Reporting
- Track student concerns to identify recurring issues and areas for improvement.
- Prepare reports and updates for BUSRC board members and meetings.
- Assist in drafting formal recommendations, petitions, and advocacy letters.
- Participate in the Advocacy Positions and Ownership Consultation Committees and take the minutes for them.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Strong understanding of student rights, academic policies, and university governance.
- Experience in advocacy, student leadership, research, or policy work is an asset.
- Excellent writing skills for drafting position statements, proposals, and policy briefs.
- Strong research and analytical abilities.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion and professionalism.
- Passion for social justice, equity, and student empowerment.
- French language skills.
